Junteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Independence Day for African Americans, celebrated on June 19th beginning in Galveston since 1866, the holiday has long been called Junteenth.

On June 19, 1865 Union soldiers landed in Galveston Texas with the news that the Civil War had ended 2 1/2 months before and that all slaves were free. The Emancipaton Proclamation had been signed into law 2 1/2 years before. Texas was arguably the last state to get this news and the first state to make it a day of celebration.
